What Is Self? Exploring Identity and Renewal Through Faith
The Transformative Power of Baptism
In the Christian tradition, baptism represents more than a ritual; it symbolizes cleansing, renewal, and transformation. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist is a pivotal moment. John speaks of one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire—a powerful image of purification.
The Holy Spirit’s fire burns away ego, attachments, and mistakes, leaving behind authenticity and purpose. When Jesus is baptized, the heavens open, and a voice declares, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you, I am well pleased.” This profound moment affirms Jesus’ identity and sets an example for all seeking to align with their true selves.
And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you, I am well pleased.
(Luke 3:22)
Baptism reminds us that our past does not define us. It offers the promise of a clean slate and a life filled with grace, connection, and purpose.
The Search for Authenticity

The quest to understand the self often involves peeling back layers of ego, societal expectations, and personal fears. This journey of discovery is echoed in many faith traditions.
In Hinduism, the concept of Atman (inner self) and Brahman (universal spirit) emphasizes unity between the self and the cosmos. Similarly, Christianity describes the Holy Spirit as a refining fire, revealing the truth of who we are by removing the distractions and attachments that obscure our essence.
Authenticity is not tied to achievements, possessions, or external validations. Instead, it is about recognizing the divine within ourselves and our connection to others.
Letting Go of the Past
As a new year begins, the metaphor of a calendar provides a meaningful way to reflect on renewal. The old calendar, filled with completed tasks and mistakes, is set aside. The new calendar offers a clean slate—an opportunity to look forward with hope and purpose.
Faith operates in much the same way. Baptism and renewal remind us that we are forgiven, and the burdens of our past do not have to define our future. This assurance creates space for transformation and the pursuit of joy and peace.
The God You Worship Shapes Who You Are
How we envision God influences the kind of people we become. A vision of God as loving, compassionate, and merciful encourages these qualities to flourish within us. Conversely, seeing God as distant or judgmental may lead to fear and rigidity.
Faith calls us to reflect the highest virtues: love, peace, and mercy. By aligning with these values, individuals can live authentically and cultivate meaningful connections with others.
A Life of Renewal
Faith is not a one-time event but an ongoing journey. Each step forward invites deeper understanding and greater authenticity. Through baptism and reflection, individuals can shed what holds them back and embrace their full potential.
The search for self is ultimately a search for connection—with God, with others, and with the possibilities within us. This year, as new opportunities unfold, may the journey toward authenticity continue, guided by faith, hope, and love.
