Giving Back & Serving Others

We believe faith is best expressed through action. Whether it’s volunteering locally, supporting mission partners, or lending a helping hand to those in need, there are many ways to make a difference.

UCC History

The United Church of Christ (UCC) was established in 1957 through the union of two Protestant denominations: the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches. Each of these denominations was itself the product of earlier mergers, reflecting a history of unity and shared faith.

The Congregational Churches trace their origins back to the Pilgrims of Plymouth Plantation (1620) and the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (1629), who recognized their unity through the Cambridge Platform of 1648. Meanwhile, the Reformed Church in the United States began in 1725 with congregations of German settlers in Pennsylvania, later growing with the arrival of Reformed immigrants from Switzerland and other European countries.

The Christian Churches emerged in the late 18th and early 19th centuries as a response to the theological and organizational rigidity of denominations like the Methodists, Presbyterians, and Baptists of that era.

The Evangelical Synod of North America was formed in 1840 by an association of German Evangelical pastors in Missouri, inspired by the 1817 union of Lutheran and Reformed churches in Germany.

Over time, the UCC has grown to include members from diverse backgrounds, including Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, Volga Germans, Armenians, Hungarians, and Latino Americans, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and unity in diversity.

The History of the Bostwick Lake Congregational United Church of Christ

Since its founding in 1846, Bostwick Lake United Church of Christ has been a cornerstone of faith and service in the Bostwick Lake and Rockford communities. Its story began on June 18, 1846, when nine charter members gathered at Smith Bailey’s home in Cannon Township to establish the First Congregational Church of Cannon. Guided by Rev. Isaac Barker, who was commissioned by the American Home Missionary Society, the group adopted Articles of Faith and a Church Covenant, laying the foundation for a spiritual home that would endure for generations.

In its early years, the church faced the challenges of pioneer life, with scattered settlements and limited transportation making worship gatherings difficult. Yet, the congregation’s commitment to faith and community prevailed, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual care that has defined the church ever since. Over time, the church grew and evolved, adopting new names and expanding its mission to reflect its enduring values.

Today, Bostwick Lake Congregational UCC continues to thrive as a place of inclusivity, spiritual growth, and service. The church offers a wide range of programs, including Bible studies, grief support groups, book clubs, and walking clubs, providing opportunities for fellowship and connection. Many activities extend beyond its walls, reflecting a commitment to serving the broader community.

Under the leadership of Pastor Dr. Jonathan White, Bostwick Lake UCC honors its rich history while embracing modern tools like an active online presence and a YouTube channel to connect with people near and far. For more than 175 years, the church has been a beacon of compassion and a source of inspiration, standing as a testament to the enduring power of faith, love, and community.
